Effective drainage is the cornerstone of durable infrastructure. Whether it's a highway underdrain, a agricultural field drain, or a leachate collection system in a landfill, the principle is the same: collect water and remove it without moving soil. This is where a high-performance geotextile for drainage becomes indispensable.
The Filtration Principle
A standard drain consists of a perforated pipe surrounded by a gravel envelope. The gravel supports the pipe and creates a high-permeability zone, but without a filter, the surrounding fine soil will gradually wash into the gravel voids, clogging the system. This is known as "piping."
The Solution: Wrapping the gravel or pipe with a nonwoven geotextile.
How it Works: The geotextile filter is designed with an Apparent Opening Size (AOS) small enough to retain 90-95% of the base soil particles. At the same time, its high permittivity ensures that water flows through unhindered. A stable "soil bridge" forms at the fabric interface, allowing water to pass while holding the soil matrix in place indefinitely.
Modern Solutions: Geocomposites
Traditional drainage layers require significant thicknesses of expensive, heavy aggregate. To save space and weight, engineers increasingly turn to geocomposites .
What they are: A geocomposite drainage system combines a geotextile filter bonded to a drainage core (often a three-dimensional mesh or cuspated sheet).
Advantages: These products provide in-plane flow capacity superior to gravel, are much lighter and easier to install, and are ideal for applications with limited space, such as behind retaining walls, on green roofs, or in landfill leachate collection.
Application-Specific Design
The choice of geotextile depends on the soil type and flow requirements.
Fine Silts and Clays: Require a geotextile with a very small AOS to prevent piping.
High Flow Conditions: Require a geotextile with very high permeability.
At HZ Geotextile, we understand these nuances. Our range of drainage geotextiles and geocomposites is engineered to provide reliable, long-term filtration and flow, protecting your project from the damaging effects of water.
