Project Challenge: A 45-degree highway embankment in a region of heavy rainfall was experiencing chronic surface erosion and shallow slips. Traditional riprap was failing, and vegetation could not establish. The client needed a cost-effective, long-term solution to stabilize the slope and prevent sediment runoff into a nearby waterway.
Engineered Solution: HZ Geotextile engineers, in collaboration with the geotechnical contractor, proposed a reinforced vegetative system using a geocomposite. The solution consisted of a high strength biaxial geogrid laminated to a non woven geotextile filter. This product provided both reinforcement (via the geogrid) and immediate erosion control and filtration (via the geotextile).
Installation Process:
The slope was regraded to a more stable angle and compacted.
Rolls of the geocomposite were placed up the slope, with the geogrid orientation parallel to the slope direction for maximum tensile strength. Overlaps were secured as per specification.
The composite was immediately backfilled with a layer of quality topsoil.
The area was hydroseeded with a native grass mix.
Role of the Geocomposite:
The geogrid provided tensile strength to the soil mass, tying the unstable surface zone into the stable substrate, effectively creating a coherent, reinforced block resistant to sliding.
The geotextile layer prevented the loss of topsoil from hydroseeding, retained moisture for seed germination, and allowed for natural drainage, preventing pore water pressure buildup.
Results & Performance: Vegetation established within 6 weeks, providing permanent biological armor. Post-installation inspections over three years, including through extreme storm events, showed zero erosion, no slippage, and a healthy, stable vegetative cover. The solution was more economical than a permanent hard armor (concrete/gabion) system and required no maintenance.
